David Allan Coe Injured in Crash With 18-Wheeler Near Ocala
The 73 year old “outlaw” country singer David Allan Coe, who wrote the well known Johnny Paycheck hit “Take This Job and Shove It” and performed favorites like “You Never Even Called Me By My Name”, was in a serious accident with a tractor trailer near Ocala last night, as he was headed home from the Tampa Hard Rock Casino at 1:30 am. Mr. Coe was cited at fault in the accident, for running a stop sign. David Allan Coe is still active in his long and diverse music career. While the press release about his recent accident calls his songwriting “introspective and surprisingly gentle”, two underground albums that he released in the 1980s were described in a New York Times article as “among the most racist, misogynist, homophobic and obscene songs ever recorded by a popular performer”.
The initial reports about last night’s accident suggest that alcohol or speeding were not involved, but that Mr. Coe ran a stop sign and was struck by a tractor-trailer.
