Orlando Most Dangerous For Pedestrians
The City of Orlando has the dubious distinction of being the most dangerous place in the U.S.A. for pedestrians. About one person per week is killed as a pedestrian in the Metro Orlando area. Pedestrians, bicyclists and joggers are being killed at an increasingly alarming rate on our roadways, and something needs to be done about it. Road design may have a lot to do with it, but it is largely negligence on the part of either the pedestrian or the motorist in most cases. Motorists fail to yield to pedestrians who often have the right of way, and some pedestrians aren’t paying attention for their own safety. Two pedestrians are hurt daily in Metro Orlando and one is killed every week according to statistics. Transportation for America conducted a nationwide study that revealed that of the top 5 most dangerous cities for pedestrians, 4 were Florida cities: Orlando-Kissimmee, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach. It may be difficult to understand how our roads are more dangerous for pedestrians than New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and other major metropolitan areas, but it is a sad fact.
