Patients Suffer While Nursing Homes Overcharge
According to a November report by federal health care inspectors, the nursing home industry overbills Medicare to the tune of about 1.5 BILLION dollars every year! This is for care patients don’t need or for care they need but never even received. Yet, Medicare is billed and taxpayers are bilked. The practice was found to be worse at for profit nursing homes than at nonprofit nursing homes, although it was present in both. Over the last several years, study after study have suggested to many researchers that the increase in the number of for profit nursing home operators has given rise to ever increasing waste, fraud, and patient harm. This has resulted in more and more civil lawsuits against these nursing homes for wrongful death, personal injury, neglect and abuse. In addition, it has resulted in False Claims Act or Whistleblower lawsuits for Medicare and Medicaid fraud.
