Women Targeted By Johnson & Johnson Develop Ovarian Cancer from Talc
Black women across the country are shocked to find out they’ve been targeted by Johnson & Johnson marketing campaigns for decades. Women of color are a major demographic for Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower products. After coming under fire in the late 80’s for selling products containing possible cancer-causing talcum powder, Johnson & Johnson denied the research and focused sales on ethnic opportunities.

Thousands of women have come forward after developing ovarian cancer from long-term use of talcum power. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, one of the most recent wins was Jacqueline Fox, a black woman who developed ovarian cancer at the age of 59 after using baby powder for genital hygiene over the course of five decades. Fox filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson executives, but subsequently lost her life to the cancer in October of 2015.
Fox’s son continued the fight, and Johnson & Johnson was held accountable for negligence. The company was found guilty by a jury for conspiring to sell these products specifically to black women and failing to notify all customers of the possible dangers associated with talcum powder. Fox was one of many women who thought they were taking diligent care of their feminine needs, but instead found that the product they relied on cost them their life.
Every year, 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer resulting in an estimated 14,000 deaths. Of those diagnoses, 2,500 could be linked back to talcum powder use. Johnson & Johnson continues to deny scientific research despite the fact that studies have found excessive exposure to talcum powder raises the risk of ovarian cancer by 33 percent.
