Drunk Driving Accidents and the Holidays
Alcohol is a common fixture of many holiday parties. Unfortunately, the risk of serious auto accidents increases every December due to drivers who ignore their limits and still choose to get behind the wheel.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving and other organizations are commemorating National Impaired Driving Prevention Month in an effort to put an end to avoidable collisions on our roads at what should be a joyous time of year. According to the most recent data, more than 800 people died in December 2012 from collisions involving a drunk driver.
Even limited amounts of alcohol can negatively affect safe driving ability. Signs that you might be sharing the road with an impaired driver include:
- Swerving in and out of lanes
- Delayed reaction to signs, stoplights, and changes in traffic or road conditions
- Irregular speed
- Sudden stops or turns
- Failure to signal before turns or switch on headlights at night
- “Near misses” with the curb, stationary objects, and other cars
Of course, these behaviors could be signs of distracted or careless driving not caused by alcohol. However, drunk driving is in itself a reckless act that could result in serious injury to the impaired driver and anyone else on the road.
