Pedestrians Can Be Distracted Too
Legislators are leading a charge for enactment of laws prohibiting the use of cell phones, iPods, and similar devices when jogging, walking or bicycling. A report in 2010 from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association noted a showed an increase in pedestrian fatalities for the first time in several years, with Florida having one of the largest increases in pedestrian fatalities. The safety group felt one reason for the trend was distracted pedestrians.
So, don’t jog, bicycle or exercise when distracted by cell phones, iPods or other devices. You need all your senses focused on your own safety. Situational awareness is paramount for pedestrian safety.
